‘A must win game’ that’s the message from the Vikings players and coaches this weekend, as they tackle Maidenhead Seconds at Footes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

Last weekend the Vikings produced a good performance against runaway league leaders Richmond Normans, before they were undone in the second half, as the London club secured the win they needed to seal the league title.

St Jacques faced Maidenhead with a drastically weakened side last month, and went down 50-0 on that occasion, however thankfully they are much stronger this week.

The black-and-yellows have been able to call on several reinforcements, including Brad Webb and Nick Merrien who start in the second-row together.

Tom Creed and Jacob Smith are both unavailable this week, meaning Jacob’s brother Mitchell starts at number 8. He will also skipper the side with Matt Lomas ruled out by injury.

Dale Rutledge, who was potentially the Vikings best player last week continues at scrum-half and he is joined by Tom Veillard at fly-half once again.

Last weeks starting front-row Corey Wallis, Finn O’reilly and James Mroch all move to the bench, ready to bring the impact when needed. Michael Smith, Leon Gardner and Tom Bray all start this week.

Chris Croft and Barney Paul are in the back-row this week, joining Mitch Smith on the flanks.

Michael Jamieson is back in the Vikings squad for the first time since Bournemouth, having played for Guernsey Raiders recently. He starts at outside centre with Dave Davison and Reece De Jersey unavailable and injured this week.

On the wings, Academy Colt John Welbourne is rewarded for a strong first showing last week, as he starts this week. He is joined by Jean-Luc de Garis who was effective last week. Joe Le Roux is also back after missing last week, and slots in at full-back.

On the bench James Regnard is poised to offer significant impact, along with Tor Ritchie-Bandy.

Jonny Groves impressed against Maidenhead on the wing when he made his debut, and he will bring size and pace to the backs from the bench.

This is no doubt a vital game for the Vikings this week, and hopefully on Saturday they will secure their first victory at home this season.

Kick-off is 2pm at the Old Rugby Club pitch.
