After a kick-off which was delayed by near an hour due to travel delays, the black-and-yellows took an early lead through a Brad Webb converted try. The big lock was able to score following a penalty inside the St Francis 22 which was kicked to the corner. From the resulting lineout they drove an excellent maul over the line with Webb emerging from the bottom of it with the ball.
The lead was extended not too long after, when Lucas Barker cleverly took a tap penalty inside the St Francis half and made significant metres before being hurled down. Now inside the visitors 22 lock Jacob Smith was able to power his way over the line with a well worked try from the home side. This was to be the first try from the younger Smith brother on the day, but certainly not the last as the man-of-the-match would go to score two further tries, one of them in empathic fashion.
With a two try lead behind them many would have expected the Vikings to kick on from that point, however once again they took their foot off the gas and allowed St Francis into the game. Lazy defending cost the home side dearly as the visitors went on to score two unconverted tries before half-time, nothing less than they deserved for the spirit and fight they were showing against the unbeaten league leaders. The Vikings only reply was a Matt Lomas penalty, ensuring they went into the changing rooms at half-time with a seven point lead and plenty to fix.
Ray Smart will not have been a happy man with much of the first half performance from his players, and after some likely home truths during the break he would have hoped for an immediate response from his team. However what he got was a knock-on from the second half kick-off 5 metres out from their line. This started a period of sustained pressure from St Francis inside the home 22 which last upwards of 12 minutes, and eventually the much improved Vikings defence failed and the visitors touched down in the left hand corner.
Jacob Smith was very quickly about to put St Jacques back into the lead, and he did it in style. The big forward collected the ball 30m from the try-line, he was quickly up to full speed and charged through several tackles including the full-back who got dragged over the line as he attempted a last ditch tackle to score a fabulous individual try.
James Regnard got in on the action as he scored the next two tries as he made sure the final result was in no doubt, before fittingly Smith completed the scoring with his hat-trick score five minutes from time to round off the match.
After the match Ray Smart said "In patches we played vey well, just too infrequently. We started really well, the first 10 minutes were great, but then we went off the boil."
"There was a lot of stop-and-start going on and they are a good side at slowing things down, they play at their speed and are very good at it. We didn't quite react to that but we also lost our shape as well."
"After the first 10 minutes of the second half when we couldn't get our hands on the ball, we showed how we can play. Its a shame that the two worst performances of the season have been the two home games - I think the guys are just excited to play here and they want to show they can do well, they've just got to get used to that and they will."
