Here comes the real test!
The Vikings are five games into the Counties Three Hampshire season and remain unbeaten, but this weekends away match-up with Havant Thirds’ is undoubtedly going to be their greatest challenge to date.
The hosts currently sit second in the table, having won all four of their games with a bonus point and benefit from a game in hand over the Vikings.
Returning to Guernsey on Saturday evening with a win on the scoreboard is hugely important for Ray Smart’s side, as they seek to continue their dominance at the top of the division.
Whilst the Vikings were big winners at Footes Lane last weekend, Havant had a rest weekend and will likely come into this clash with a rested and handy side.
Smart is thankfully able to name several strong experienced players for the trip, with Tom Creed and Hugo Culverhouse being available. Both will bolster the forwards pack, and whilst Culverhouse will likely be back involved with the Raiders side in the not too distant future. He gets the opportunity to build some match fitness having been out since the start of the season when he picked up an injury.
Tom Bray is one of the young players who has come through the Vikings in recent seasons, but gone on to play more regularly for the Raiders. He is this week available for the black-and-yellows and will be aiming to anchor the scrum in the front-row. He is joined by James Mroch and James Beck.
Oscar Bailey and Will Forbes-Lee had debuts to remember last weekend, and they keep their place in the side this weekend. Bailey has switched positionally with Taylor Quate for this weekend, and starts in the centres with Quate on the wing.
John Welbourne has had to wait for his opportunity this season, but the talented fly-half has been given the responsibility of running the Vikings attack this weekend in the no.10 jersey. The former colt played several times last season and showed himself to be a gifted player, but he has a big responsibility this week.
Lucas Barker has also returned to the squad, and takes a place on the bench, ensuring the Vikings have a quality and experienced replacement option.
This is a huge test for the Vikings, which they will be hoping they can come through with another victory.
