The Vikings are back in action on home soil this weekend, but in less familiar surroundings.
The black-and-yellows welcome Havant Three’s for what is expected to be a hotly contested affair, with the game due to be played at the old St Peter Port School site at Les Ozouets, as the club pitch at Footes Lane is currently unplayable due to being waterlogged.
Ray Smart’s side had the narrowest winning margin last weekend to maintain their unbeaten record, after they came back from behind against Winchester Seconds to win 19-18 in the UK. They will be hoping for a more convincing performance this weekend, but the test of Havant will be no easy task.
The visitors had some mixed results towards the back end of last year, but they are undoubtedly a strong team that has a real mix of experience and young talent, and will have a different look to them from the last time these two sides met. Smarts’ side are going to have to be on their best form, in what appears may be tricky weather conditions again this week.
The Vikings welcome back into their squad several players, including the inclusion of Oscar Bailey at outside centre. He has produced several strong performances since making his debut for Guernsey Raiders in December, and will be a welcome boost for the side, with Joe Le Roux side-lined with a head injury. Lucas Barker continues at inside centre this week.
Dan Rice is another exciting player to step back into the Vikings colours this week, having been unavailable for several games. The talented fly-half has performed very well this season and helps add a real edge to the Vikings attack. He will be integral this week.
Michael Smith is also forced to sit out this week, after he too picked up an injury last weekend. The loosehead prop is replaced by Corey Wallis who returns from injury, and James Mroch joins him in the front-row at hooker, with the ever-present Tom Bray completing the trio.
Last week’s man-of-the-match Tom Creed starts in the second row, along with Jacob Smith. Barney Paul is promoted from the replacements this week, to start at no.8, with Mitch Smith and Chris Croft joining him in the backrow.
The Vikings Captain Matt Lomas moves to the wing this week, and Gearoid Lee joins him in the back-three at full-back. Sam Ferry completes the outside backs line-up.
The replacements this week include Sam Kissack who made his debut last weekend, and the Vikings forwards coach Dan Brown. He has played once already this season and will likely prove a very handy option from the bench. Tom Veillard covers the backs.
Kick-off is 1.30pm at Les Ozouets.
