Will 18 be the magic number?
That’s the big question in the Vikings camp as they head into a home clash with Andover Seconds knowing that a bonus point win could secure the league title this weekend.
Ray Smart’s men are undefeated in all 17 matches this season and have recently returned to near their best form. But they cannot be complacent at the business end of the season.
Andover will likely arrive at Footes Lane in a determined mood to spoil the potential party, and the forth-placed side will be no pushover. They tested the Vikings in their earlier season encounter, and that will be fresh in the minds of the Sarnian side.
Last weekend the Vikings ran out big winners over the Isle of Wight, whilst the visitors had a significant victory of their own over Fareham Heathens. This looks set to be a cracking contest.
Smart’s side will be without livewire scrum-half Dale Rutledge who is on holiday for a few weeks. He is replaced by the versatile Tom Veillard, who moves in from the centres.
Taylor Quate made a double try-scoring return from injury last weekend and he continues in the centres this week, with Joe Le Roux partnering him.
The selection process was no easy feat this weekend for the Vikings coaching team, with thirty players available for this important match.
One player returning is Tom Creed in the second-row. He is an important part of the black-and-yellows forwards unit, and having missed last week he will bring his usual physicality and organisational skills.
There are few players who are having such a big impact on the Vikings attack at present than Jacob Smith. The big man has been in destructive form with the ball in hand, and he will likely be a big threat this weekend. He joins Creed in the second-row.
Phil Le Noury made an excellent return to action last week off the replacements bench, and he starts in the back-row this week. He partners with Mitch Smith and Barney Paul. Jack Webber moves to the replacements, offering a dynamic option when he enters the action.
The front-row has had boost in the way of Darrin Bellingham, who is available to the Vikings this week. He starts at prop, with James Mroch and Tom Bray continuing their partnership.
Victory may not be enough for the Vikings to secure the title this weekend, as they will be waiting on the result of Winchester Seconds against Overton, but all Smarts’ men can do is play their part, and then wait and see.
Kick-off is 12.30PM on the Garenne Stand at Footes Lane.
