The Vikings return home this weekend determined to turn performance into points as they face Portsmouth RFC in Round 5 of the Counties 1 Hampshire campaign at Footes Lane.
Last weekend’s 44–33 defeat away to Millbrook was a tough one to take. The Vikings produced their most complete performance of the season, scoring five tries and dominating large periods of the contest, only to be denied in heartbreaking fashion. Less than a score behind and chasing the winner in the dying stages, a late interception cruelly ended hopes of victory.
While the result slipped away, there were undeniable positives. The forwards produced a commanding display, providing a strong platform and showing real improvement at the set piece. The side’s shape, work rate, and physicality have all taken clear steps forward — but taking full advantage of scoring opportunities remains the key focus.
That has been the recurring theme of recent weeks: the Vikings are creating plenty of chances but not converting enough of them into points. Head Coach Layton Batiste has made it clear that accuracy and composure in the opposition 22 will be decisive if the team is to get their season moving in the right direction.
This weekend offers an ideal opportunity to put that right. Playing at home, under the Garenne Stand at Footes Lane, brings both familiarity and confidence. The Vikings will be aiming to harness the benefits of home conditions and convert their recent improvements into a first win of the campaign.
There are a number of changes to the side that faced Millbrook. Jamie Dunn comes in from Guernsey Raiders to strengthen the front row, while Henry Watkin, one of the club’s talented Academy graduates, starts at hooker. Angus MacCallum, who was outstanding and named Player of the Match last weekend, moves to the back row, with Mitch Smith shifting into the second row alongside his brother, Jacob Smith.
In the backline, Matt Lomas-Lloyd moves from fullback to inside centre, bringing his tactical kicking and distribution into midfield. Reece de Jersey, returning to Guernsey after several years at university, slots in at fullback. An experienced and intelligent player, his return adds depth and control to the backfield.
Out wide, Taylor Quate returns to the starting XV having been unavailable last weekend. His raw pace and direct running will add another attacking threat to the Vikings’ back three and provide an outlet for quick counterattacks.
Gearoid Lee is unavailable this week, while Coach Dan Brown takes a place on the bench, offering leadership and impact in the later stages.
Visitors Portsmouth will make the trip in a confident mood, having won their last two fixtures — edging Millbrook 13–12 and beating Bournemouth Seconds 34–32 in a high-scoring contest. Their ability to grind out tight wins under pressure will make them a tough challenge for the Vikings, who know they must be more clinical if they are to get over the line.
With home advantage the Vikings will be looking to make their dominance count and secure the result their recent performances have deserved.
Kick-off is 1:30pm on Saturday at Footes Lane.
Guernsey Raiders Ladies are also in action before hand, with an internal friendly match at 11:30am.
