St Jacques Vikings make their debut in Zoo Sports Shield Division Two this weekend, with the visit of a side from the second oldest rugby club in England, Richmond FC.

The Vikings will be taking on the 4th XV ‘the Normans’ from this historic club, and whilst in most cases that would elude to potentially an easier day at the office, that is far from the case on this occasion as Richmond boast five very strong sides, with players from across the globe amongst all their ranks. This promises to potentially be the strongest side St Jacques have faced in the modern era, however they are looking forward to making the step up as coach Ray Smart explained he is happy with how their pre-season preparations have gone.

“We have had a really big pre-season this year, as we knew it would be needed ahead of making such a big step up to Zoo League Two. We have kept majority of our players from last season which is really good, and we have gained two players back from university in Gearoid Lee and Pierre de Garis who are both involved on Saturday. The players have worked very hard over the summer and I am excited to see how we fare this weekend.”

With no restrictions on moving players to and from the Raiders squad this season, the Vikings are able to call on the services of three frontline Raiders players this week. Layton Batiste starts for the Vikings in the front-row whilst Chris Ahne lines up in the centres, with new winger Mike Agyei-King getting his first taste of Guernsey rugby in a Vikings shirt. The Vikings are also able to call on their big veteran number eight James Regnard, and have open-side Tom Rihoy available before he heads off to university shortly, but they are without Darrin Bellingham who is still recovering from a shoulder injury sustained in the Fallaize Cup on Siam day.

The match kicks-off at 1.30 pm on the Footes Lane rugby club pitch Saturday.
