Coaching changes for the new season

Coaching changes for the new season

James Mroch2 Jul 2024 - 10:00

After seven and a half years in charge, head coach Ray Smart has announced he is stepping down following our recent promotion-winning season.

It’s been a great journey so far for the Vikings. Alec and I have been honoured to play a small part in the rollercoaster that is the Vikings.
- Ray Smart, outgoing Head Coach

Ray’s tenure as head coach has been arguably the most successful period in the club’s history, which saw two league titles secured, as well as three successful promotions. The most recent of which has taken the club to our highest-ever position, when we will compete in Counties One Hampshire (Level 7) this coming season.

In addition to the accolades, Ray has also overseen the development of over 100 players, with over 10 of those going on to play for Guernsey Raiders in the national leagues.

Ray has been ably supported over the years by a number of assistant coaches, and one of the longest serving Alec Bailey has also announced he is stepping down.

A former Guernsey RFC 1st XV, Guernsey RFC 2nds & latterly Vikings player, Alec was an illusive flyhalf turned coach who assisted in the development of many players, and helped develop a lethal backline, that has lit up Counties Three & Two in recent seasons.

Current forwards coach Dan Brown will remain as part of the new coaching team next season.

Speaking on the announcement of their departures, Ray Smart said:

“It’s been a great journey so far for the Vikings. Alec and I have been honoured to play a small part in the rollercoaster that is the Vikings.”

“Having overseen the side reach their medium-term goal of moving up from level 11 to playing at level 7 next season, we are extremely proud of what the players have achieved over the years, and we look forward to seeing them achieve their potential in the coming seasons.” Added Smart

Ian Hackeson, Chairman of St Jacques Vikings commented on the impact both Ray & Alec have made on the club:

“As we prepare to welcome a coaching team to St Jacques Vikings, I, on behalf of the whole club, would like to thank Ray and Alec for their contribution to our success.”

“Steering the Vikings from level 11 to level 7 doesn’t happen without an enormous amount of skill, dedication and commitment to the task. Ray and his team have achieved fantastic results with the players on the pitch, whilst also contributing enormously to the running of our club.”

News on the appointment of our new coaching team, including a new head coach will be announced shortly.

We will also be sharing news of our opposition and fixtures in the coming days.

From all at the club, we thank Ray & Alec for their brilliant service and contributions. They leave the club in a much stronger place thanks to their efforts.
