St Jacques travel this Saturday to the only team they have not played as in their maiden Hampshire Solent League campaign, Gosport and Fareham RFC.

The original fixture against Gosport which was scheduled for back in November was postponed, after sufficient away travel was not available for St Jacques.

Jon Bell’s men have won ten straight games and after a hard fought victory over Winchester last weekend they are hoping to keep the momentum going. Gosport are currently sixth in the table, and after struggling early on in the league have picked up some positive results recently, and also pushed Havant very close, losing out by only two points a few weeks ago.

Bell is very aware they do not know what to expect from Gosport, and he is keen for his team to remember that ahead of the game.

“We know very little about Gosport and Fareham, so we must work hard on Saturday and not be complacent. When we play on the front, in both attack and defence we are a dangerous team. However in the last few games we have tended to sit back and just think we will win rugby matches without keeping the intensity high, we cannot continue to do that or we will come unstuck. In the second half against Winchester last week we increased the intensity and took the game to them, and they didn’t like it. We have to do that from the off this Saturday.”

St Jacques have made five changes to the starting team which beat Winchester, with Conor Murtagh, Scott le Page and Matt Horton all unavailable due to various commitments, whilst Dickon Addis is away on holiday.

Tom Chammings will play at fly-half with the versatile Sam Crawford slotting in at full-back. Sam Pearson and Piers Ockleford will continue to occupy the midfield and the fast improving Aaron de Carteret returns to the wing. Ben Le Noury starts his first game in the front row for a while, with the experienced Trevor Marquis dropping to the bench. Jake Cornes starts in the second row alongside Bjorn Van Der Kammen and Alex Penney comes in at blindside flanker. Ryan Jordan will revert to no 8 in Dickon Addis absence.

Saturday will also signal the return of last seasons player of the year, Phil Smith, who took a break from the game earlier this season. The resourceful back who played most of last season at scrum half will offer support from the bench, as will promising young scrumhalf Elliot Eastwood who returns after some time out with injury. Hayden Dempsey, veteran Kev Davies & Josh Kewell will join Trevor Marquis in offering options to the coaches in the forwards.

On naming his team Bell said. “We have made a few changes for this week, however I’m confident we have a strong squad available. All the players unavailable have been playing well recently, but the lads coming in have been pushing really hard in training and deserve the opportunity to impress. Its quite a long season but luckily we have a big squad now so we can rotate and still bring in good players.”

Saturday's game is the only fixture in the Solent league this weekend, and victory will see St Jacques to pull 14 points clear at the top of the league.
