Tottonians 2nd’s are the visitors, and although they can no longer win the league title, they will be looking to cause an upset and condemn St Jacques to their first league defeat this season.
Tottonians have been one of the form teams in the Solent league this season, and are currently sitting 2nd in the league table. The reverse fixture in December was a very close run affair with the black and yellows eventually winning 10-3 on a boggy pitch. On that day both teams showed their strong attacking qualities, and on a flat KGV pitch this Saturday it could make for some excellent running rugby from both teams.
St Jacques Head Coach Jon Bell is keen to make sure his players maintain their intensity levels and work rate this weekend after being crowned champions. “We cannot afford to take our foot of the pedal now we have won the league, we have to be on our best form this weekend. Tottonians are a good physical side, and will be travelling to the KGV looking to finish the season strong and with the full intention of trying to beat us, particularly as they lost last weekend to Gosport. It’s not easy to maintain the same intensity levels after being crowned champions, however if we want to remain unbeaten we are going to have to do so.”
Bell has delayed naming the starting team, but has been able to name a strong squad for the game. He is able to recall the explosive forward duo of Ryan Jordan and Ben Le Noury who have now overcome injuries which have kept them out for the past few games. Fellow forwards Scott Le Page, Dickon Addis and Alex Penney also return after missing the trip to Havant.
Excellent half-back Conor Murtagh is now unavailable for the two remaining league fixtures as he is on holiday, but scrum-half Jake Gallienne has recovered from his groin injury in time for this weekend.
Tom Chammings will likely continue at fly-half, and after some excellent performances recently is growing into the position very quickly. Primarily a full-back, Chammings has showed versatility and tremendous development this season, and the young man who is moving to Hartbury College next season, one of the UK’s premier rugby institutions, looks likely to have a brilliant future ahead. Dave Haimes is the only other change to the backs.
Kick off is 13.30 at the KGV on Saturday.
