After a couple of below-par recent performances, St Jacques Vikings are back in action this weekend.
They travel to fifth-placed Winchester Seconds after last week’s home fixture against United Services Portsmouth was postponed following the aftermath of Storm Ciarán.
Head Coach Ray Smart has named a strong squad for the trip, as his side seek to return to form against a side who gave them their toughest test last season.
The hosts nearly toppled the Vikings when they last visited Nuns Walk, as the Sarnian side scraped a one point victory, coming from behind late on in the match.
James Burger was the hero that day, scoring the crucial try, but he will not be a part of the side on this occasion as he is now regularly featuring for Guernsey Raiders in National Two East. Several of his Raiders teammates will feature for the Vikings however, as they get some additional game time this week.
Charlie Simmonds comes in at scrum-half having last played for the Vikings in the Fallaize Cup against Jersey in May. He brings significant experience to the backline, which also includes Niall McGann from the Raiders.
In the forwards Darrin Bellingham returns to the front-row, partnering with Phil Le Noury and newcomer JP Phelan. They will aim to set the platform for the Vikings from the front, which considering the recent adverse weather will likely be essential.
Barnaby Paul and Tom Yarwood bring some additional dynamism to the back-row, along with Mitch Smith.
Young prodigy Will Creber makes his third appearance in Vikings colours, he plays in the midfield once again, whilst captain Matt Lomas leads the side from fullback.
The Guernsey side know they must find some of their early season form if they are to overcome an expected spirited Winchester side, who will relish the likely wet playing conditions. The challenge is on for the Vikings.
