The Vikings are ready to face arguably their biggest test of the season so far on Saturday, as they seek to topple fellow undefeated side United Services Portsmouth.
Ray Smart’s men have managed to hold on to their 18 month undefeated league record, but below par performances in their last two outings means they come into this clash with a point to prove.
The match was scheduled to be held at the Memorial Field at Footes Lane, but will now be played at Les Ozouets Campus down the road following the downpours of storm Ciaran.
Centre Taylor Quate returns to the side after missing the last two matches. He has had a brilliant start to the season, and his return this week provides a boost to the side for this eagerly awaiting contest.
With the weather expected to be wet once again, the strength of the Vikings forwards unit is going to be essential if they want to overcome a likely strong USP side. Thankfully prop Darrin Bellingham is available this week, whilst Tom Yarwood also returns from injury to take his place in the back-row.
Whilst the Sarnian side have had two stand-out victories and two close recent matches, the visitors have also had a similar start to the season. Only a single bonus point separates USP and the Vikings, making this likely to be another competitive contest.
Vikings captain Matt Lomas is named amongst the replacements this week, as he gets a partial rest having played nearly every minute so far this season. Mitch Smith will lead the side from the start of the match this week.
Two other players return, Barnaby Paul and Kieran Creber missed the trip to Millbrook but return to add an extra edge to the Vikings side.
This is going to be a huge test for Smart’s Vikings, the conditions will make it likely a battle on all fronts, but he will be hoping they can adapt and prevail once again.
Kick-off is 12.30PM at Les Ozouets Campus (Old St Peter Port School).
Guernsey Ladies are also in action at 12.30PM on the Garenne Stand, with Guernsey Raiders following at 3pm against Barnes.
